I’m slowly starting to tell Cora a bit about my life here. Most of the soup has been eaten, the muffin and the glass of milk, although it took a while. She had to rest every few bites. Her eyes are drooping and I’m sitting with her on the couch with my arm around her. It’s become apparent that Cora needs to rest for a few days before I take her to the cabin. Vinnie won’t hear of a motel room and already has Cora's suitcase unpacked in her guest room.

“I've got to get back to work,” Vinnie interrupts. “Will you kids be all right?”

“I don't know how to thank you,” I say as I get up and give her a hug.

“Sam,” she says, “you're welcome to sleep on my couch for a few days until we get this young lady back on her feet.”

“You're the best,” I say, and she hustles out the door.

I walk over to Cora, help her to her feet, and walk her into the small extra bedroom. I lay her on the bed with the white chenille bedspread and lie down beside her and hold her hand. The old mattress sags a bit, but this feels like heaven.

Finally Cora speaks, “It's a very long story and I'm too tired, okay?”

“You're here and we have all the time in the world,” I say quietly.

She smiles and rolls on her side toward me and goes to sleep.

I’m overcome with emotion. I’m so glad there's no one to see me. Something awful has happened and I know it had to do with Paul. I’m overwhelmed with guilt that I gave her back to him. I should have known. People don’t change, not really. I’m sick with it.

But she got through whatever it was and decided to come to me. I’m so exhilarated she’s here that I want to run around doing fist pumps in the air.

I tuck a blanket around her and watch her sleep. I know I’ll make it my mission in life to try to protect her from anything like this again. I know I’ve just been waiting and hoping. I hope I can begin to deserve her.
